Additional Information

Joly Braga Santos (1924-1988) together with his master Luís de Freitas Branco, is the great Portuguese symphonist. His work is divided in two essential periods: the first – till 1951 – denotes a strong influence by his master and the second one is already inspired by post-war tendencies. The 6th Symphony (his last) for sopran, choir and orchestra, was composed in 1972 and dedicated to his daughter Maria da Piedade.

Anton Bruckner (1824-1896), composer of the most imposing and ambitious symphonies of the 19th century, completed his 6th Symphony in A major in 1881 and was premiered in 1899 conducted by Gustav Mahler. Although possessing many of the features of this previous symphonies, his 6th  Symphony differs from the previous ones for its richer and more imaginative instrumentation.
