Synopsis

There are relatively few concerts among the works of Ludwig van Beethoven. They all date from 1790 and 1815 and include one for violin, five for piano and a Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano, commonly referred as Triple Concerto in C major, op. 56.Written between 1803 and 1805 and premiered in Vienna three years later, this concerto belongs to a creative period that has produced some of Beethoven’s masterpieces such as Symphony N.3, Piano Sonata n.23, Appassionata, and Fidelio is only opera.

Sergei Rachmaninoff composed his Symphony N.2 in E minor, op. 27 between 1906 and 1907, period in which he also composed the eerie Isle of the Dead. This symphony was first heard in St. Petersburg in 1908 conducted by the composer himself and dedicated to Sergei Taneyev, a Russian composer and former Tchaikovsky’s pupil.  Because of its formidable length the symphony was subjected to many revisions between 1940 and 1950.
