Synopsis
Nabucco, Verdi’s third opera was premiered at La Scala in 1842. One of the themes from the opera’s Ouverture, the Va, pensiero chorus, was considered by the Italians as a hymn of patriotic resistance against the Austrian oppression. Royal Music for Fireworks was commissioned by King George II to Häendel in 1749 in order to celebrate the signature of the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapelle and Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral is a well known passage of Wagner’s Lohengrin, an opera which was first performed in Weimar in August 1850. Three contemporary works will follow: Mike Forbes’s Torque for brass ensemble and percussion first performed in 2013, Reminiscence from the composer/saxophonist/pedagogue Tommy Smith, Victor Faria’s Fado do Adeus and finally Chuck Mangione’s Children of Sanchez whose main theme served as soundtrack for the film of the title and produced in 1978.
